My Top December Gingerbread Activities for Kids (Fun and Easy)
Teaching in December is one of the hardest months to get students engaged. Students and teachers are checked out and ready for the winter break. With these fun December Gingerbread activities for kids, students are sure to be on their best behavior.
In this post, I will share with you some fun December gingerbread activity ideas. If you want to save time planning and not have to recreate the wheel, you can grab all of the worksheets and activities from this post HERE!
Gingerbread Anchor Charts
The first activities in my gingerbread no prep pack are some fun premade anchor chart templates. The anchor chart templates included are:
- What is Gingerbread
- History of Gingerbread
- Books About Gingerbread
- Gingerbread Adjectives
- Gingerbread KWL
I love using these templates to help me trace out a chart beforehand. This helps me save time and reminds me what to talk about during our whole group conversation. The best part about these templates is that they come in black and white and can be used as mini-posters or note-taking pages for your kids.
The History of Gingerbread
Take me back to second grade! Picture learning about history, reading, writing, and math by focusing on a fun topic like gingerbread. I think I would forget that I am really learning. Especially if actual gingerbread cookies showed up!
During this unit, students learn about the history of gingerbread, holiday traditions using gingerbread, and how gingerbread recipes have changed through time.
Students also learn about vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, and math. There are a ton of fun worksheets students can choose from to learn about gingerbread in this Gingerbread No Prep Pack. Some worksheets included are non-fiction readers, a reading compression page, a mini picture book, facts cards, and more!
Gingerbread Vocabulary
Vocabulary worksheets make a great morning work activity to get students ready for the day. Working with words to write sentences and draw pictures helps ELL and struggling students prepare for the topic of the day.
In this Gingerbread No Prep Pack, students will learn about the words; gingerbread, ginger, molasses, spices, confection, fairings, caricatures, and tradition.
Gingerbread Word work
Also included in my December theme notebook units are word work practice sheets. I used my curriculum pacing guide to help me pick which spelling pattern to focus on in each notebook.
The idea is that by the end of the year, each notebook will include the most common spelling work that a typical second grader will cover. This will help you have extra word work activities to spice up your lessons.
This activity pack focuses on long I words (spelled with –e, -igh, & y patterns) and words ending in –s & -es.
Gingerbread Parts of Speech
Teaching grammar is boring. Yup, I said it. Learning about parts speech is hard (at least for me – because it is boring). But students might find it fun if you throw in some fun holiday themed worksheets.
In this pack, your students will work on activities that focus on nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions, and contractions.
Grammar/Parts of speech worksheet included:
- ABC Order
- Parts of speech: noun, verb, adjective, and pronouns
- Prepositions
- Contractions
- Pronouns
December Gingerbread Reading
Also included in this gingerbread worksheet pack are several fun reading and writing activities.
The best part, these gingerbread activities for kids can accompany any book!
The activities focus on the main idea, characters, problem and solution, and theme. There are also fun choice boards where students can pick a book then complete an activity of their choice.
December Gingerbread Writing
Need to teach How-to writing, or expository and imaginative? This unit included fun prompts for different writing styles that a typical second grader needs to know.
There are lots of different writing prompts and opportunities throughout the unit that provide fun opportunities for students to practice different styles of writing while learning about gingerbread and celebrating December in your class.
December Gingerbread Math
Along with learning about the history of gingerbread and ELA activities, this gingerbread theme worksheet pack includes math! Activities focus on 2-digit addition and subtraction, counting money, and telling time.
There are fun math games and color the code worksheets that focus on gingerbread activities for second grade. The best part is that the games and worksheets are print and go. The only extra materials that you need are pencils, crayons, and dice.
