Teaching About Polar Bears: Simple Activities For Kids

Winter months are full of fun activities and topics kids love to learn about. Sometimes winter months make it hard to get off the couch and properly plan a lesson, and I am 100% guilty of this. In this post, I will share with you some fun activities for teaching about polar bears that focus on science, reading, writing, and math.

All of the worksheets and activities in this post are from my Polar Bear Science Math and ELA Worksheets pack.

Teaching About Polar Bears: Anchor Charts

To start a fun unit on teaching about polar bears, I like to make an anchor chart. The first activities in my Polar Bear Science Math and ELA Worksheets are some fun pre-made anchor chart templates. The anchor charts focus on facts about polar bears, parts of a polar bear, the life cycle of a polar bear, and an easy KWL chart to see what students already know about these fuzzy bears.

I love using templates to help me trace out a chart beforehand. This helps me save time and reminds me what to talk about during our whole group conversation. The best part about these templates is that they come in black and white and can be used as mini-posters or note-taking pages for your kids.

Science Activities: Teaching About Polar Bears

I love when I can find a thematic unit on a topic that teaches every subject in my class. During this unit, students learn about habitats, diets, the needs of a polar bear, and its life cycle.

Students also learn about adaptations that help polar bears stay warm in their cold environment. There are a ton of fun worksheets students can choose from to learn about polar bears in this Polar Bear No Prep Pack. Some include non-fiction readers, a reading compression page, a mini picture book, facts cards, and more!

Vocabulary: Polar Bear Activities for Kids

Vocabulary worksheets make a great morning work activity to get students ready for the day. Working with words to write sentences and draw pictures helps ELL and struggling students prepare for the topic of the day.

When teaching kids about polar bears, I like to discuss the words; habitat, arctic, mammal, carnivore ice floe, den, cub, and blubber.

Word work: Teaching About Polar Bears

Also included in the Polar bear Worksheet pack are word work practice sheets. I used my curriculum pacing guide to help me pick which spelling pattern to focus on in each notebook. You can grab a free science pacing guide to help you plan out our year HERE!

This activity pack focuses on r-Influenced vowel patterns (er, ear, eer).

Grammar: Polar Bear Activities for Kids

Getting students excited to learn about parts speech is hard. But grammar can be fun if you add a polar bear theme to your lessons. Your students will have fun completing activities that focus on nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions, and linking verbs with these no-prep worksheets.

Reading: Polar Bear Activities for Kids

Also included are several fun reading and writing activities.

The reading worksheets can be used with any book you currently have. The activities focus on the main idea, problem, solution, and theme. There are also fun choice boards where students can pick a book then complete an activity of their choice.

Writing: Teaching About Polar Bears

The writing activities have students complete writing prompts that focus on expository, research, imaginative, and how-to writing styles.

The different writing prompts provide fun opportunities for students to practice different styles of writing while learning about polar bears in your class.

Math: Polar Bear Activities for Kids

Along with science and ELA activities, this Polar bear Worksheet pack includes math activities! Activities focus on 2-digit addition and subtraction (with and without borrowing and regrouping), counting money, and telling time.

There are fun puzzles and math games that focus on polar bears too. The best part is that the games and worksheets are print and go. The only extra materials that you need are pencils, crayons, and dice.
