7 Simple St Patrick’s Day Activities Perfect for STEM
Tomorrow is a half-day, so I have some fun St. Patrick’s Day activities planned for the kids. I love incorporating Holidays and celebrations into the class because the students jump at the opportunity to do things out of the ordinary. Although learning is still very much taking place, they seem to think they are just having fun!
P.S. Be sure to grab some FREE St. Patrick’s Day worksheets at the bottom of this post.
Free and Easy St. Patrick’s Day Activities:
1. Picture Books
These are my favorite two picture books! I used my Scholastic points to get both but they are pretty inexpensive on Amazon. Both of the read-alouds on Youtube are pretty good if you want to just play the book on your TV instead.
1. How to Catch a Leprechaun by Adam Wallace.
2. How to Trap a Leprechaun by Sue Fliess.
2. St. Patrick’s Day Activities: Writing
Writing is a very simple way to incorporate St. Patrick’s Day activities in your room. After reading one of the books I had my students draw a picture of a leprechaun trap then make a small story based on their design. I also had my students use transition words while writing their stories. We chose the words: First, Second, Next, Then, and Last.
Here is a picture of our books! They came out so cute. Nothing fancy- you probably have all of this in your classroom already!
3. Anchor Chart
Here is an anchor chart that I made for my class that I am going to use tomorrow with some fun St. Patrick’s Day activities. We are going to watch a video about St. Patricks day then write down facts on the chart.
4. Videos
- Brainpop has a good video that talks about the original meaning of St. Patricks day as well as facts about how different countries celebrate. They also have ideas for St. Patrick’s Day activities as well.
- This youtube video is great for younger kids who want to know a little bit more about this special day!
- History.com has a great video on St. Patrick and talks about how the traditions today were started and are still celebrated.
5. Websites
- National Geographic Kids talks about myths, who St. Patrick was and traditions today.
- Honey.nine.com has great information and facts about the holiday
- Hello Kids is a great option for 3-4th graders to do a website scavenger hunt or you could have the students visit the website on an iPad or computer to collect facts.
6. Songs
Another fun way to incorporate St. Patrick’s Day activities into your curriculum, is through music. While my students wrote their books about catching a leprechaun, I played Irish music in the background for them to listen to. I used a video I found on Youtube. There are a ton to choose from! This is the one I used: HERE!
7. STEAM
For those of you who have an area of your room for stem challenges, you could have your students make a Leprechaun trap with materials from around the room! I have a few students who LOVED doing this!
Also, if you want to see more pictures of our day, check out my Instagram! I posted the students responses to the anchor chart there!
