Your students will love these government services and community helpers lesson plans activities, and you’ll love how easy they are to teach. I’ve rounded up my favorite community helpers activities that are perfect for teaching about services that the government provides to its citizens. These virtual activities will help you save time planning!

Community Helpers Lesson Plans: Introduction

Government can be a tough topic to talk with your friends about. But, it can be a fun topic to discuss with your kids. When I think of government services activities for kids, getting to pretend to be a community helper, brainstorming ways to help out in your neighborhood, and giving thanks to hard-working service workers springs to mind. With the help of technology, you can take a boring topic and turn it into a fun digital activity with Google Slides. I took my original government services activities for kids worksheets and turned them into a fun digital resource that is perfect for a social studies center.

Teach about Community Helpers with Videos

Some great videos on YouTube do a great job discussing different services the government offers. Here is one that I like.

Enhance Community Helpers Lesson Plans with Digital Slides

If you want to spruce up how you introduce a topic, I love showing a PowerPoint presentation on Google Slides to go over new topics. See the Government Services Google Slides Activities I use, or create your own, by using PowerPoint or Keynote. I uploaded mine to Google Slides so I can send it home to my students as homework or a distance learning activity.

Digital Worksheets for your Community Helpers Lesson Plans

Another great activity to teach community helpers and government services are digital worksheets. I like using these to help students learn how to take notes and answer questions using complete sentences. These are great because you can quickly check your classes work by logging on to google classroom.

The one that I use is from my Government Services Digital Slides Pack. Once the students have read about different services, they can take notes or answer the questions by typing in the text boxes.

Use Digital Task Cards

Task cards are another fun activity to get students to learn about a topic. Sometimes it is hard to get your class to move around the room. But, using a digital version like these can help you make a typical paper-based activity more exciting and independent for your young learners.

I created a simple slide using two boxes to showcase two different services at once. The descriptions of the services are simple, so as a class, we can elaborate on what each service does for our community. I like to stress the importance of each service and what it would be like without the help of these government community helpers.
