This post is a collection of my Beginning of the Year Science Anchor chart ideas”. If you would like a copy of these anchor charts and more, you can download them HERE!

To easily recreate these, use a large anchor chart pad and a document camera. Tape the anchor chart sheet to your wall, then project the PDF or paper on top of the chart. Trace over the title and drawings with a pencil. When you are with your students fill in all of the important parts as a class! Remember, anchor charts should be student-created, so use this resource as a guide to help you create the base of your chart.

What is a Scientist? Science anchor chart

At the beginning of the year, I love to start off by teaching students what scientists are. I like to emphasize that we are all scientists! Ask your class what they think of scientists and what they think a scientist does.

Scientists KWL

The next science anchor chart I like to make is a simple KWL. This page can be used as a graphic organizer instead of an anchor chart. It can serve as morning work or an early finisher activity. Use this page to help you see what students already know about scientists.

What Do Scientists Do? Science anchor chart

Teaching students about what scientists do is also an important beginning of the year topic to address. Discuss with students the different science processing skills that they will use throughout the year to complete investigations and experiments.

Types of Scientists

Once my students and I have made our “What is a Scientist” anchor chart, I like to make a “Types of Scientist” chart. We discuss different types of scientists and use books and resources to add to the chart.

Famous Scientists

The last science anchor chart that I make, is an ongoing chart that focuses on famous scientists. I love using this page as a mini chart in their notebooks so that they can record famous scientists as they read about them throughout the year. It is fun to watch the list grow and to take time to write down noteworthy people as your class finds them.
