Low-Prep Habitat Activities for Elementary Science
In my classroom, we love to learn about animals and habitats with fun activities. But because this year has made finding low-prep habitats activities a bit harder, I have made a list of some easy ideas to teach about habitats and biomes. In this post, I’ll share how to teach habitats by using low-prep hands-on and distance learning resources.
Low-prep Habitats Activities for Elementary Students
Depending on the grade you teach, your students may need to know different details and facts about habitats and biomes. These ideas will help you teach:
- What habitats are
- How to classify a habitat
- Popular habitats around the world
- Common climate, plant life, and animal life in each habitat
Vocabulary Posters and Habitat Activities
First, I love using real-life photos and low-prep worksheets from this Animal Habitats and Biomes: Activities and Worksheets unit to teach vocabulary words. The words we discuss when talking about habitats are; organism, habitat, biome, environment, climate, ecosystem, need, and survive.
Introduction slides and Nonfiction Readers
When teaching science, incorporating introduction slides or nonfiction readers is always a great way to introduce the topic. I love using slides and nonfiction readers to help my students learn about habitats. Nonfiction readers are also a great way to teach your class how to take notes while you’re reading. I like to use simple graphic organizers or note pages to help students write down what they have learned.
I love this reader because it is truly a low-prep habitats activity that students will really learn from. This reader can easily be displayed on your document camera then read out loud to your class. It makes a great way to save paper.
Low-Prep Digital Activities: Students Will Love
Another great low-prep habitats idea is using digital slides as early finisher work or distance learning resources. With the help of a parent or grownup, I like to give my students fun activities that they can do using a tablet or computer (in my class or at home). In addition, Google Slides are a great option for early finishers or homework assignments as well!
This activity is a fun way to get students interested in researching more habitats and learning about the world around them. It is easy to use, and my students love working on Google Slides activities. It is from this Habitats Digital Activity Pack!
Habitats and Biomes Flipbook
Mini Research projects are another way I love to get my students to learn about habitats. Having students work on flipbooks makes a great mini-research option. Flipbooks are a fun way to incorporate the content into your classroom and make a perfect end of the unit assessment.
Low-Prep Habitats Activities
Teaching your class about habitats is one of my students’ favorite topics to learn about. My class loves to explore new places and learn about the climate, plants, and animals that live there. Habitats and biomes make an engaging topic to teach with research projects.
The activities in this post are from my Animal Habitats and Biomes: Activities and Worksheets and my Habitats Digital Activity Pack!
