Start with a Map

Before diving into each region, give students a visual anchor. Pull up a simple US map and have students circle and label all five regions. Then open it up. What do they already know about the states and land in each area? This quick warmup activates prior knowledge and gives you a peek at what misconceptions to address before you even start the unit.

Spend One Day Per Region

Teaching all five regions at once is a recipe for confusion. Instead, dedicate at least one day to each region so students can focus on what makes that area unique. Think climate, landmarks, and culture. Breaking it up gives students time to really absorb what they are learning before moving on to the next region. The Northeast feels very different from the Southwest, and students need that space to notice those differences.

By slowing down and spending real time on each region, students walk away with a much stronger understanding of how the United States is divided and why.

Make it Personal

One of the best ways to teach US regions for kids is to connect the content to their own lives. Ask students if they have ever visited one of the regions or if a family member lives there. Have them draw a picture or answer simple questions like: What was the weather like? Did you see any famous landmarks? What did you do there? What time of year did you visit?

Personal connections make geography memorable, and connecting content to real experiences is one of the most effective teaching strategies you can use.

Build It with Play-Doh

Play-doh is a classroom classic for a reason. Have students build each region onto a printed map using play-doh, then use toothpicks to trace region borders or carve in landforms and landmarks. It is hands-on, low-prep, and works for any age. Students can get creative adding mountains to the West or flat plains to the Midwest. It is also a great activity to revisit at the end of the unit as a review. These us geography worksheets already have the maps built in. Just print and go.

Go Digital with Google Slides

Students can work independently or with a partner, and you can use it as an informal assessment to catch misconceptions early. It is a great way to get curriculum into students’ hands without adding to your to-do list.
