Low-Prep 5 Regions of the United States: Activities
This post is full of low-prep U.S. regions activities for kids, as they learn about geography in your classroom. These 5 regions of the united states worksheets and activity ideas will help you plan your lessons.
Regions of the United States for Kids: Exploring Maps
When teaching elementary students about U.S. regions, it’s important to review map skills and how to read a map using its features.
Use simple maps to show students where the different regions are. Have them circle and label the different regions then, discuss what they know about the states/land there.
Break it Up
Teaching students about the regions can be a little overwhelming. There is a lot of information out there. My biggest advice is to spend at least one day on each region.
Breaking up each region will help students focus on the unique characteristics of each place. I like to have students use these facts cards to collect notes about each region while we are studying the unit.
Make Personal Connections
One engaging way to teach regions of the united states for kids is to have students talk about their own experiences and possible vacations they have taken there.
I love to have students draw pictures to explain what the area was like. Some possible questions you can have students answer are:
- What was the weather like?
- What did you do there?
- Did you play outside or inside more?
- Did you see any famous landmarks?
- What time of the year did you visit?
Building Regions of the United States for Kids with Play-Doh Mats
A popular activity with kids at any age is play-doh. At least in my class. One Low-Prep activity I like to have my class do is build regions onto maps using play-doh. Students can take it a little further by using tooth-picks to trace out the different shapes or carve fun landforms and landmarks into the doh.
Lets go Paperless
For a virtual spin on teaching regions of the united states for kids, I love to add some fun Google Slides activities to a social studies center.
Giving students the option to work on technology during their free time is a great way to get the curriculum into their hands in a fun way. Students love working on Google Slides projects independently or with a friend. It also makes a great option to see how students are comprehending the material. You can use Google slides to take an informal assessment to see what misconceptions they may have.
