Landforms Activities That Kids Can Do At Home
One of the most challenging things about teaching is finding activities that students can do at home. It’s hard to know if parents have the supplies or ability to teach a subject the way you would in your classroom. In this post, I’ll share with you some easy landforms activities that kids can do at home.
Landforms Activities for Teaching Geography
Most materials in this post are from my Landforms and Bodies of Water Activities pack or can easily be purchased from any grocery store. Be sure to introduce the activities and explain the directions to each kid before you send anything home.
Introduce Landforms with Posters
Teaching students about landforms and bodies of water can be a little overwhelming. There are so many that students have not yet seen. I recommend making a list of the ones you want your class to know about, then finding pictures of each to show them.
One way to make this activity something that students can do remotely in their own home is by providing fun landform cards or pictures that students can look over like the ones pictured here.
If you are looking to save paper, you can make a fun Google Slides presentation to show the different landforms. Then, have them draw their own on a piece of paper or a social studies notebook. Check out the one I made here in my Landforms and Bodies of Waters Digital Activities if you’re short on time.
Landform BINGO
Finding games for families to play together is a great way to get kids and parents engaged and motivated about learning. Games like BINGO and Memory are fun and easy ones that parents can play together.
Build Landforms With Shaving Cream
Another fun activity is building landforms with shaving cream. Have students take small pieces of paper and write the names of different landforms on them. Next, have a parent or sibling call out the name of one of the landforms and see who can build the landform the fastest/best with only shaving cream. (This is a fun activity we do in class every year!)
Show Videos and Websites
Send home links that parents and students can explore together. Here are a few good ones I like!
Drawing Activities
Your students will learn that landforms can be found all over the world! Have them look at maps and globes to try and find landforms. My students like to see which ones they can find close to home.
Students can also draw landforms and bodies of water that are unique to their state. They can draw a picture or write a story about visiting famous ones that make awesome tourist attractions. This makes a quick and easy landforms activities that kids can do at home!
Google Slides Landforms Activities That Kids Can Do At Home
In my Landforms and Bodies of Waters Digital Activities, I have serval resources that are perfect for a remote learning assignment or even a homework activity.
One of my favorites is this digital landforms matching game. Students look at the different landforms and bodies of water, then drag the names on to the pictures.
All of these activities are easy to do at home with simple materials you may already have. These activities will be fun and engaging for your students to learn about geography.
