4 Easy Habitats Activities for Distance Learning
Who would have thought at the beginning of the year the words “distance learning” would be spoken and heard as much as it is right now. It takes infinitely longer to teach a child through a Zoom call than 1-to-1. To help you teach your class about habitats, I gathered a list of fun habitats activities for distance learning while we can’t be in the classroom.
A few of the resources photographed in this post are from my Habitats Digital Activities resource in my shop!
Habitat Observations: Draw the Habitats Around You
With all science-related topics, it’s great to start by getting your kids to observe their own natural surroundings. Talk to your class about the word habitats. Show them examples and pictures of different homes and places where people and animals live.
For an easy and fun distance learning habitat activity, have your class draw a picture of their habitat and who they share it with. Challenge them to find more than one habitat in their house, or outside on a walk with their family. When they are done, they can simply take a picture of their drawing with their mom or dad’s phone and then have a parent email you the picture.
Habitats Vocabulary
A great way to start your new topic in science is by teaching your class vocabulary words that may go along with the unit. I always like to make a list of words that I think the kids will probably come across throughout the time we study a topic.
Some words that I came up with were, habitat, organism, environment, biome, ecosystem, climate, need, and survive.
In Habitats Digital Activities pack, I created vocabulary cards using Google Slides to send to the kids with a few activities to choose from. You can have your class write sentences, copy the words and definitions down, or draw pictures of what the words mean on a piece of paper or science journal.
Digital Activities: Habitats Activities for Distance Learning
Google slides is a great resource to use with your class. I created this fun digital resource about habitats using Slides. It’s full of vocabulary, websites, videos, and interactive digital activities. You can easily upload assignments to your class using Google Classroom or email the presentation to your student’s Google account. Here is a video of the slides in action!
Creating a Google account is free and easy. If you are unsure of how to create one, here is a tutorial video on YouTube with simple directions. Side note: you don’t have to use Google Classroom in order to use Google resources in your class.
Videos About Habitats are Perfect for Distance Learning
Here are two great videos that explain habitats to kids. Play or send the videos to your students and have them write down new facts that they learned about habitats.
Continue Planning: Yearly Roadmap
Hopefully, you were able to gather some fun habitats activities for distance learning. If you would like a copy of my Habitats Digital Activities, you can grab them in my shop. I also created a free yearly roadmap for science. The PDF makes planning stress-free. Make sure to grab a copy to help simplify your lesson planning for the year.
