Teaching About Veteran’s Day with 3 Easy Activities

| | |

Veterans Day is a national holiday in November. It’s a special time to celebrate the importance of Veterans and the service that they have made for our country. I have some activities for kids to share with you today to use when you’re teaching about Veteran’s Day, and the best part…. one is free!

Teaching About Veteran’s Day: Watch and Listen

There are so many book options and videos out there that are great for using to help you teach this topic. You can read a short story, book, or watch a video at the begging of a lesson, end of the day, or during quiet time after recess.

You can place books in your classroom library or QR codes with links to videos that students can use to independently learn about Veteran’s Day.

Here are some videos that I like for teaching about Veteran’s Day:

Teaching About Veterans Day with Music

Music is another great way to get students motivated about a topic. During the week, try playing songs that talk about the American flag, patriotism, and the U.S.A. A great time to play music is during writing time. Have students write a letter to a veteran that they know and play music to set the mood.

Teaching about Veterans Day: Anchor Charts

Another great suggestion on teaching about Veterans Day is by making an anchor chart. Gather students on the carpet and jot down important facts and ideas that you want your students to know.

I love anchor charts, but sometimes they are time-consuming. I have a pack of free Veterans Day anchor charts that will help you save time. Inside the Veteran’s Day Anchor Chart pack are fun anchor charts, graphic organizers, and student note pages. Be sure to grab a copy for your class here!

Teaching About Veterans Day with Art

The art center in my room was a big hit in class. Having a place to house different art materials like popsicle sticks, glue, paint, construction paper, and stickers can help you tap into your students’ creative side when learning about a topic.

I loved having an area where I could set out small directions for art projects that students could work on independently as an early finisher activity. Enchanted Learning has some great ideas on low-prep art projects that you could have your students do. Check them out here!

Want More Ways to Teach About National Holidays?

I love taking time out of the day to teach students about all of the different national holidays we celebrate in our country. Spending time on teaching customs and celebrations is a great way for students to share about their family traditions.

My National Holidays Unit has everything you need to teach about the different holidays your students will love. And it is now fully digital and printable.

I’ve included 5 low-prep lesson plans to get your students thinking about different holidays and why we celebrate them. There are also worksheets, vocabulary, materials for early finishers, QR codes, homework suggestions, and an end-of-the-unit quiz!

Students will be introduced to 6 different National Holidays:

  • MLK Day
  • Presidents’ Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Labor Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Independence Day

After reading and learning about different holidays, students will share the ways they celebrate holidays with their families.
